Global scientists agree: the window is rapidly closing to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. The Town of Atherton is committed to doing its part to build a more sustainable future. It is our goal to preserve the environment and safeguard public health while ensuring the economic well-being of our residents.

Good news: Atherton exceeded its 2020 goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to 15 percent below 2005 levels (roughly the equivalent to 1990 GHG levels). In fact, we reached 27 percent below 2005 levels! Learn more about our Climate Action Plan.

What’s next? Atherton has committed to reducing GHG emissions to 49 percent below 2005 levels by 2030 (or, 40 percent below 1990 levels). The Town of Atherton’s Environmental Programs Committee is working alongside our Sustainability Coordinator Douglas Kim to make sure we are on track through 2030 and beyond.

The majority of Atherton’s greenhouse gas emissions are produced by gas-powered vehicles and gas-powered appliances in residential homes. To achieve our goals - and stem the worst effects of climate change - Atherton residents will need to take individual action today.
