Across North America, more than 28,000 members in the US and Canada use this week to energize and educate the public on the importance of the contribution of public works to their daily lives: planning, building, managing and operating the heart of our local communities and building the quality of life.
This year’s theme "Building for Today, Planning for Tomorrow" represents the classic idea of stewardship embodied by the profession of public works and the professionals that practice it. Focusing on the communities; "building" points out the day to day aspect of public works that is quality of life, while "planning" references the sustainable practices that ensure that quality of life for future generations.
The Week seeks to enhance the prestige of the often-unsung heroes of our society-the professionals who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.
Atherton’s Public Work’s Department is always hard at work. In addition to the numerous service calls received by Public Works on a daily basis we are working hard to maintain our streets, roadways, and park. In addition, Public Works is responsible for discharging critical responsibilities in connection to the design, construction, maintenance and/or operation of major public works projects including street reconstruction and patching, installation of new signals and signage, and storm drain improvements.
To follow the Public Works monthly activities you can access the City Manager’s written report to Council. The Report is prepared monthly as part of the City Council’s Regular Agenda. To access, visit the Town’s website at www.ci.atherton.ca.us and navigate to Agendas and Minutes. Click on Item 6 of the City Council regular meeting agendas. It includes departmental updates on the various happenings around Town such as reports from Administration, Community Services, Planning, Police, and Public Works.
