The Atherton Police Department has recently received some complaints of motorized skateboards traveling in town. The complaints include traveling down the center of roadways, riding in the opposite direction of traffic, riders not wearing helmets, unsafe movements, and weaving in and out of traffic.
Under California Vehicle Code section 21968 (Motorized Skateboard Prohibited), no motorized skateboard may be propelled on any sidewalk, roadway, or any other part of a highway or on any bikeway, bicycle path or trail, equestrian trail, or hiking or recreational trail. This means that a motorized skateboard may not legally be operated on the sidewalk, street, or bike lane. A violation of this section is an infraction punishable by a fine of at least $197.00.
