RethinkWaste, in collaboration with Recology San Mateo County and South Bay Recycling, will host its first annual celebration of “America Recycles Day”. This free event is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Shoreway Environmental Center in San Carlos.
America Recycles Day is celebrated each year in mid-November and is the first community-driven, national event aimed at increasing awareness and encouraging Americans to recycle. Since the first America Recycles Day in 1997, the event has educated millions of Americans on the environmental, social, and economic benefits of recycling.
This year’s event will feature a compost giveaway, tours of the Shoreway Environmental Center, e-waste recycling, arts and crafts, and more. Additionally, the winners of RethinkWaste’s second annual America Recycles Day Poster Contest, open to all 3rd through 6th grade classes in the RethinkWaste service area, will be recognized at the event. The winning posters will be on display, providing attendees an opportunity to see the creativity of local youth.
“To us, America Recycles Day is a way to celebrate our communities’ efforts to conserve natural resources and protect our environment,” said Faustina Mututa, RethinkWaste’s Environmental Education Coordinator. “This is a great opportunity for the community to tour the Shoreway Center and learn about what happens to all the materials put in the blue (recycling), green (organics) and black (garbage) carts.”
The free compost is for residents only, no commercial customers, while supplies last. Paper bags and shovels will be provided for attendees to use, or they may bring their own containers.
