[ARCHIVED] Mosquito Treatment in West Atherton

San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District will be conducting a truck-mounted ultra-low-volume (ULV) adult mosquito control treatment between midnight this Friday night, July 29th and 5am Saturday morning, July 30th, in areas of West Atherton. You can see a map of the treatment area by clicking on the Additional Information link at the bottom of this page.

This treatment is being conducted in response to the discovery of adult mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in your immediate area. Infected adult mosquitoes are capable of transmitting West Nile virus to humans. Although many human West Nile virus infections are asymptomatic, adults over age 50 are at increased risk of severe illness if infected. There is currently an elevated risk of West Nile virus exposure in your area, and we strongly recommend that all residents take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, including:

- Keep doors and windows closed or tightly screened, and inspect screens regularly for openings

- Wear insect repellent and/or long sleeves and pants outdoors, especially at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active

- Dump and drain standing water around your home were mosquitoes may breed

This treatment does not pose any significant risk to humans, pets, gardens, wildlife, or the environment; you do not need to take any special precautions during the adult mosquito control treatment.

In conjunction with the adult mosquito control treatment, you will also see District technicians in your neighborhood this week and next. In order to interrupt the West Nile virus transmission cycle, it is important to prevent more mosquitoes from hatching. Technicians will be inspecting properties in your area to find and treat or eliminate any standing water where mosquitoes may be developing.

For more information, please visit or call the District office at (650) 344-8592.
