Burlingame, CA – 10 August 2016 – Mosquito samples collected from Atherton following San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District’s adult mosquito control treatment on Thursday, Aug. 4th, have tested negative for West Nile virus.

“Although we didn’t find infected adult mosquitoes this week, residents are encouraged to continue to continue to take basic precautions against mosquito bites,” said the District’s Public Health Education and Outreach Officer, Megan Caldwell. Residents should:

• Apply insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535. Always follow label instructions.

• Make sure that doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes and repair or replace screens with tears or holes.

• Eliminate standing water and containers that can hold water from around the home.

Last week’s adult mosquito control treatment achieved a 70% reduction in adult mosquitoes in the area. Although no further adult mosquito control treatments are scheduled for Atherton, ongoing efforts to control mosquito larvae in the area will continue. For assistance with a mosquito problem in San Mateo County, contact the District at (650) 344-8592. For more information on West Nile Virus or District services, visit www.smcmvcd.org.
