Middlefield Road Bicycle Lane Improvement Project

The Town's Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan was accepted by the Council in November 2014. The Master Plan outlines priorities for bicycle and pedestrian improvements throughout Town over the 10-15 years.

Priority projects included in the Town's 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan are:
  • Providing saving crossings of El Camino Real and Selby Lane (Fiscal Year 2017/18) - project estimate - $139,000.
  • Improving Safe Routes to School near Encinal Elementary School at Middlefield/Encinal/Oak Grove and Glenwood (Fiscal Year 2017/18) - project estimate - $295,000.
  • Install Marked Crosswalks with Solar-Powered LED Pedestrian Activated Signs at Middlefield Road and Glenwood Avenue (Fiscal Year 2017/18) - project estimate - $10,000.
  • Perform preliminary design for Class II Bicycle Lanes on Atherton Avenue between Alameda de las Pulgas and El Camino Real (Fiscal Year 2018/19) - project estimate - $150,000.
  • Design and Implement Class II Bicycle Lanes on Middlefield Road (Fiscal Year 2017/18) - project estimate $850,000.
The Middlefield Road Class II Bicycle Lanes is the major project for Fiscal Year 2017/18. The Town has retained a consultant to begin design and implement projects. The focus of the project is the installation/improvement of bicycle lanes along Middlefield from the Menlo Park border to the North Fair Oaks border. The County of San Mateo has committed to a connection at the Town's border.

Significant improvements will include widening of the roadway, improving shoulder conditions, restraining with high-visibility green markings at conflict zones (intersections) and increasing way finding signage.

There is a Community Outreach Meeting scheduled for October 2 (visit the Town's website for more information and a watch your mailbox for a postcard). Following the Council approval of final design (April 2018), staff anticipates going out to bid and awarding a contract in May 2018 with construction over Summer 2018.
