[ARCHIVED] Shelter In Place Update - Face Coverings and Gardening

Screen Shot 2020-04-21 at 12.18.32 PM

The Atherton Police Department would like to remind residents that, with limited exceptions, all hired landscaping or yard service for private property continues to be prohibited.

The only allowable form of landscaping will be work that is performed by the homeowner or resident; work conducted for fire safety and fire clearance; and emergency work.  Spraying of vegetation for infestations, such as moths or disease is also authorized falling under the exterminator exemption.

Please note that the County Health Officer has also issued an order requiring individuals over the age of 12 to wear a face covering when they leave their home to work or to obtain essential goods and services. This order takes effect on April 22 at 8AM.

For all shelter in place violations, the Atherton Police Department is responding to complaints and seeking voluntary compliance, taking an education first approach to enforcement.  However, compliance is ultimately required.

face-covering-checklistFace Covering FAQ’s:

Do I have to wear a face covering when I go to the store?

The Order requires members of the public to wear face coverings when they are inside or in line to enter essential businesses such as grocery stores and laundromats, when they are in hospitals, clinics, COVID-19 testing locations, dentist offices, and facilities providing veterinary care, and when they are waiting for or riding on public transportation, including ride shares, Caltrain, and BART.

Will my Lyft or Uber driver be wearing a face covering?

The Order requires drivers or operators of any public transportation, private car service, or ride-sharing vehicle to wear a face covering while driving regardless of whether a member of the public is present due to the need to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets in the vehicle at all times.

What if I’m driving by myself or with a member of my family?

The Order does not require a face covering while driving alone or with members of the same family or household in a vehicle not used commercially.

Do I have to wear a face covering if I’m out walking or jogging?

Wearing a face covering is recommended but not required for outdoor recreation such as walking, hiking, bicycling, or running. But social distancing requirements are still required to be met. For outdoor activities, the Order recommends carrying face coverings at all times, so that they can be readily worn in situations where social distancing is not possible - such as when passing on a narrow path.
